  NICK:I’m nineteen.

ALICE:But how can you live nineteen years without ever washing clothes?

  NICK:My mother always did it.

ALICE:Yes,my mother washed my clothes too.

But when I was twelve,I started to wash clothes myself.

  NICK:I know about this fact.

American children are more independent. They do more for themselves.

But I am from Taiwan. In Taiwan, children must study very hard.

So the mother does everything for the kids.

The mother wants her kids to get very good grades at school.

So I’ve never washed clothes before. You shouldn’t laugh at me for it.

ALICE:I’m not laughing at you.But let me ask you something?

I mean,if you can’t do anything for yourself.

Henry:They have the best sea food in this city. You can eat your head off. It’s on me.

13、動(dòng)物園

JASON:It’s too hot.I’m not sure I can walk any more.

  CHRIS:Oh,c’mon.You’re not so old.

I want to go to Monkey Island and look at the monkeys.

  JASON:What?They have a monkey island here?Really?

  CHRIS:Of course they do.

This is an excellent zoo. They have all kinds of monkeys here.

JASON:Great.Let’s go.I love monkeys. That’s why I started going out with you.

  CHRIS:You’re very funny today.

As for me,I’ve always loved boars and rhinos.

  I like their smell.Maybe that’s why I chose you.

JASON:I wish we could get some good iced coffee somewhere.

Wouldn’t it be great if zoos had Starbucks in them?

  CHRIS:Yes.

Then I could buy you a few espressos and you’d climb over the fence into the lion cage.

I wouldn’t have to worry about you any more.

  JASON:Hah,hah,hah.Hey,look at that polar bear.

  CHRIS:Oh,terrible.

JASON:Yes,I can’t believe they have him out in the sun like this.Isn’t it too hot?

CHRIS:It’s sad.Sometimes I think zoos should treat animals better than they do.

Look at the space they have him in.It isn’t enough.

JASON:No.It isn’t.They should have him indoors in the air conditioning.

They should give him a nice tank to swim in,and fresh seal meat every day.

They should let him have an iced coffee every couple days.

CHRIS:You’re thinking about yourself again.Always so selfish.

JASON:I feel sorry for that bear.Just like him,I’m too hot.

Both he and I–we should be in a nice cold wilderness right now.

We’re both sick of southern California.

CHRIS:Do you really want to move away?To Alaska?

JASON:Yes,when I graduate.I will move away from California. That’s for sure.

And I will take the bear with me.We will open an iced coffee cafe in Alaska.

He will do tricks for the customers and I will make the coffee.

It will be a great success.

  CHRIS:You are a clown,Jason.You are just a clown.

  JASON:Thank you.I respect clowns.Thank you very much.

So where is that Monkey Island?

  CHRIS:Over this way.Follow me.

ANN:I think I’m going to go home.

  SHARON:Why?We just got here.

  ANN:I know,but it’s 12:30.It’s pretty late.

SHARON:12:30 isn’t late! This party will probably go until three or four o’clock.

  C’mon,don’t leave yet!

  ANN:Three or four o’clock?

  SHARON:Yes.

ANN:I never stay out that late. That’s too late.

SHARON:But why is it too late? It’s Saturday night.

You have nothing to do tomorrow. Why not stay out and drink with us?

ANN:Were you so wild when you were still in Taipei,Sharon?

  SHARON:Yes,I was.And I like living here.

People know how to party here.In Taipei, some people know how to party.

  But here,everyone does.

ANN:What is that they’re doing on the couch?

SHARON:They’re smoking pot.Don’t worry about it.

  ANN:Pot?Isn’t that marijuana?

  SHARON:Yes,it is.

ANN:But,Sharon, that’s illegal! The police could come, and we could go to jail.

SHARON:Don’t worry about it.It is true that pot is illegal in America.

But the laws aren’t as strict as in Taiwan.

If people are arrested, and they have a little pot in their possession,

they don’t go to jail. They just have to pay a fine.

  ANN:Really?

  SHARON:Yes.

ANN:I didn’t know you had such wild friends.Do you smoke marijuana too?

  SHARON:I tried it a couple times.But I don’t like it.I like alcohol better.

Don’t worry about them, though. If you don’t want to smoke pot,you don’t have to.

  ANN:I don’t want to.

SHARON:That’s alright. But you really should have another drink.

People will probably start dancing soon.

ANN:I don’t know if I can drink more.I already had two drinks.

SHARON:You had two drinks at nine o’clock.

C’mon,Ann,you are in an American university now!You have to learn how to drink.

ANN:I thought a university was for studying.

SHARON:It is.We study hard all week.

And then,on the weekend,we party hard. That’s the best way to live.

  ANN:Alright.I’ll have another drink.

patient:Nurse, how long can I stay here?

Nurse:It depends on your recovery. And you are almost fully recoverd.

  P:That’s bad.

N:Why?You are not happy because you are recovered!

P:Of course I’m not happy. That damned driver hit me,put me in a hospital, paid a little money and went back home to have a big dinner!I can’t let him off lightly.I’ll stay here for a year and make the guy prostrate.

N:Oh,Grandy.Show some mercy.I think the driver has already been done justice. But one year to stay here will make you dull and doctors won’t agree. Why are you finding fault with yourself?

P:I just want him pay as much as possible.I’m a victim.

N:I understand. But this is more than a personal dispute. The ourt is involved, too.A deadlock benefits neither side.

  Gordon:How is your English study?

  Molly:It’s A-Ok.

  Gordon:Any problem?

Molly:I have trouble talking with my teacher.

  Gordon:Why are you nervous?

Molly:I never know how to act around my teacher.I need to review more.

Gordon:No problem,I will help you review.

Molly:You would do that for me?You are A-OK.
